Portrait of an older man in warm light

Legacy Films by Black Atlas

A life, filmed like it matters.

A cinematic documentary about one person's life, made with your family and kept by the generations after you.

What a Legacy Film holds

Most families have hours of birthdays on video, and almost nothing of the person telling their own story.

A family legacy video, made with the craft of a feature documentary.

We sit down with the person at the center of the film for a long, unhurried interview, lit and recorded the way we shoot our own films. We return to the places that matter, gather the photographs, letters and tapes, and talk to the people who know them best.

Then we shape it into a film: a real story structure, a considered score and an image you will be glad to watch on a big screen in thirty years.

How it works

From first call to family premiere

Your timeline and review rounds are agreed in writing before filming begins.

  1. i.

    First conversation

A free call or visit. We learn about the person, the family and what the film should hold.

  2. ii.

    Story development

We gather photos, letters and home movies, plan the interviews and choose the places to film.

  3. iii.

    Filming

One to several days with a small, quiet crew, at home and wherever the story lives.

  4. iv.

    Edit and score

We build the story, restore the archive, grade the image and score the film. You review two cuts.

  5. v.

    Premiere and delivery

A screening for the family, then the finished film and archive delivered to keep.

Who sits across from you

A director, not a videographer.

Black Atlas interviews are directed, not just recorded. The team behind our feature and sports documentaries has sat across from fighters, founders and public figures, and brings the same patience to a parent or grandparent telling their story on camera.

We light and mic the room properly, then keep the crew small and the pace unhurried.

Privacy

Your film stays in your family.

A Legacy Film is private by default. We never publish, screen or share any part of it without your written permission, and everyone on our crew works under confidentiality.

You receive the finished film and the right to share it however your family chooses.

Questions families ask

How much does a Legacy Film cost?

It depends on the length of the film, the number of interviews and filming days, travel and how much archive we restore. We send a written quote after the first conversation.

Who is a Legacy Film for?

Parents and grandparents whose stories the family wants to keep, couples marking a milestone, and families preserving the history of a home, a business or a migration.

How is this different from a family video or a memorial video?

A Legacy Film is a documentary: a directed interview, a story structure, restored archive, a score and a cinema-quality image. It is made while your loved one can tell the story in their own words, and it is built to be watched for generations.

What if my parent has limited energy or mobility?

We film in short sessions at home, at their pace. Interviews can be spread over several days.

Can relatives who live far away take part?

Yes. We can travel to them, with travel quoted separately, or discuss a remote interview option during your consultation.

Can the film be a gift?

Yes. A Legacy Film can be commissioned by a child or grandchild as a gift. We help plan the first conversation so the person at the center feels at ease.
